New Cross Gate

Balfour Beatty, in a joint venture with Carillion, was awarded the contract to create the new East London Line. TfL were the client and Bombardier Transportation are the operator of the new depot at New Cross Gate.

Bombardier manufactured new rolling stock for TfL and the servicing will be delivered out of the new purpose-built maintenance facility situated at New Cross Gate

Emico secured the prestigious contract to design, supply, install, test and commission the mechanical and electrical services, including the 750V DC Shore Supplies for the new Maintenance Facility Building at New Cross Gate Depot

The scope of works comprised of mechanical and electrical services for three sheds within the Depot – 4-road maintenance shed with office accommodation, a 2-road Wheel Lathe and Heavy Cleaning Shed and a Carriage Wash Shed

Part of the design brief is to comply with the exacting railway standards for reliability, availability and maintainability. In practical terms this translated into

The construction of the Maintenance Facility building consists of one traditional pit road and 3 No elevated roads (way beams). Along each road the following services had to be provided without impeding the operational space along the pit walkway

Between the way beam roads are double height gantries to provide access into and on top of the trains. Whilst this is a very practical maintenance arrangement for the end user it required a lot of careful planning to co-ordinate all services with the overhead DC supplies, the trolleys, cranes and hoists taking into consideration the presence of the rolling stock and gantries.
