When the Thameslink through-route opened it created a convenient link across North and South London, connecting Bedford, Luton airport, Gatwick airport and Brighton as well as many suburban locations. Part of this vital infrastructure is the new, thoroughly modern and stabling facility in Horsham where a new fleet of trains will be cleaned and maintained. Emico was engaged to carry out the M&E design working through GRIP 3, 4 and 5 stages for the signalling power, points heating, power and lighting, DNO applications and mechanical services.
In addition, Emico GRIP 6-8 installation works included DNO supplies, mains cabling, new column, bollard and walkway lighting, power distribution, water service points, points heating, signalling power, communications supplies, trace heating, earthing and bonding within a DC site.Open Gallery
Our client Carillion recognized the benefits of using Emico’s dedicated design team, who not only understand the design requirements within a rail environment but also have a huge appreciation for constructability of the design solution. Emico’s design work led to a more complete design which was buildable “right first time”. Emico led innovative design proposals such as specifying fully insulated lighting bollards and columns with a protective coating reducing the overall touch potentials on a 3rd rail site – enhancing safety of the workforce. The columns also had an internal lowering spring, eliminating the need for a two-person maintenance team using heavy, unwieldy lowering equipment.
One of our key successes was to deploy members of the design team to head up the project management of our install works, ensuring continuity and leading to a smooth transition from design, to build, to handover. At Horsham, Emico demonstrated its capability in performing across all stages of a complex project including design and construction. Emico’s specialist rail knowledge and focus on safety led to innovative designs, vital for this crucial link in the South East transport network.
