Emico are engaged by SRW to deliver the Electrical installation at Paddington Station as part of the historic and iconic Crossrail Project. The project consists of delivering the station CMS, Small Power and Lighting, as well as the Fire Alarm Detection and Suppression Systems across 4 floors of the new Cross Rail Station. Emico have a huge team in place installing services to their normal high standards and ensuring compliance sign off as the project progresses, thus maintaining our mantra of “Right First Time”. Emico are committed to delivering the project as to our client’s requirements and continuing to build strong relationships with SRW and the Crossrail team.

As part of the development and upgrade of Paddington station in west London, a new island platform has been constructed to serve the Hammersmith and City line.  The new platform is known as Paddington Suburban Underground station. Partnered with Vital Rail was engaged to design, install and commission the fire detection and suppression services.  This involved design, installation and commissioning of the sprinkler system, the dry riser system and the design verification, installation and commissioning of the fire detection and alarm system including damper control.

Development and Design

During the development of the outline design Emico produced detailed design drawings to LPCB standard of the sprinkler system as per the BB224 requirements. The fire water mains supply for the sprinkler system needed to be verified as part of the design and a water availability test undertaken on the existing supply. This was undertaken and reported on to provide assurance that the required flow levels could be achieved from the system once it had been installed. Included within Emico’s design is the fire protection of the sprinkler pipework in areas not requiring suppression, sprinkler valve chamber arrangement, pipe sizes and lengths, design points, type of sprinkler head and equipment schedule. Emico also designed and installed a new 100mm diameter dry riser to feed the landing valves on the concourse and mezzanine levels and also the hydrant outlets on the platform with a new breeching inlet at the rendezvous point.

 

Delivery

Key to the delivery of this service was Emico’s ability to assure to London Underground that there would be disruption to the service when it went live.  Assurance was provided by demonstrating with over and back tests that the system was sufficiently robust to meet the requirements.  The technical capability of Emico’s fire team also served to provide the backup and maintenance cover for the new system until handover to the London Underground operations and maintenance team.
